The riders set off down the N55 towards the first climb at Neschal with Cavendish's Omega Pharma Quick Step team at the front.

The first sprint came with 102kms to go at La Torma and saw Lucas Gaday of Buenos Aires do all the work but Leandro Messineo take the points ahead of his SLS team-mate Emmanuel Guevara who had taken the only KOM climb.

Gaday did take the second sprint beating Messineo and Haceky as Guevera struggled with a knee injury before being forced to abandon,

Gaday, Martin Hacecky, Ben Jacques-Maynes and Messineo broke away again and with 85kms to go, they had a four minute lead on the peloton.

That gap slowly dropped and with 40kms to go, it was down to 2.09 and with ten kilometres to go, the gap was down to just over a minute and the likes of Peter Sagan were bearing down on the escapers.

Three kilometres later, thirty more seconds had been taken off their lead.

They were caught with three to go. Mark Cavendish moved up to the front but it was Sacha Modolo, who won the stage ahead of the Manxman and Howard, Debusschere and Peter Sagan.

Modolo now leads the race from Cavendish.

Cannondale lead the team classification, Walter Perez leads the Sprint classification and Flavio De Luna leads the King Of The Mountains classification.
