The fuss is over and the 2015 Tour De France got underway in Utrecht with a 13.8km time trial.

In a country where there are more bikes than people, the crowds which the police estimated at around three quarters of a million, were out very early to see a Grand Depart in the Netherlands for the sixth time.

Every inch of the course was packed long before Daniel Teklehaimanot of wildcard team MTN Qhubeka went down the ramp at 2pm local time.

With temperatures in the nineties, Teklehaimot finished in 16.30, a time that was soon beat by Marcel Wyss and Jack Bauer of Cannondale.and Josh Van Emden who finished in 15.11.

The heat affected Mark Cavendish who took his time to prepare himself for the media after finishing but he composed himself and said to Covsupport News Service: "That was not good if I am honest.
"I gave it a good go but I just could not get going.
"I will see how the race goes but I am confident I can do well. There are not many sprints in the race but I am looking forward to them."

Whilst Cavendish was being interviewed, Rohan Dennis of BMC, a former World Hour Record holder set the new fastest time of 14.56.

Simon Yates finished in 16.42, with Nairo Quintana of Movistar, one of GC and Young Rider favourites finished in 15.57.

Tony Martin completed the course on a day when the temperatures did not drop in 15.01.

Orica GreenEdge's Michael Matthews was next to be drug tested, before Geraint Thomas finished in 15.30, the same time as Lars Boom.

At 5.19 local time, Vincenzo Nibali went down the ramp just before Fabian Cancellera finished in 15.03.

Tejay van Garderen came home in 15.39 and Alejandro Valverde 15.52 with Contador in 15.54.

Chris Froome finished in 15.46 and Rohan Dennis's wife was in tears as that was that and the Australian was the first rider to don the maillot jaune in the 2015 race.
