The pink jersey wearer was 3.11 down with less than five kilometres to go.

Alberto Contador put in an attack followed by Fabio Uru with Richie Porte trying to get over on the steepest part of the climb. They caught up to Domont and Porte attacked.

Polanc kept going rode away to win in 4.08.17 with Chavanel second with Aru third ahead of Contador and Porte who were all 1.31 down on Polanc.

That fourth place was enough to put Alberto Contador in the lead of the race by two seconds from Aru and twenty seconds from Porte.

A delighted Polanc said: "I have waited a long time for a victory and tried a lot of times and it is amazing to have won. "I wanted to get the maximum advantage and knew that the climb was not very steep and I had to drop Chavanel.

"I want to thank my team and the sponsors for allowing me to race in the Giro and i want to thank my family and friends for their support."

Contador, the new race leader said: "i did not really think about attacking but I had to do something as Richie and Fabio are very strong.

"Being in pink does not add any pressure to me or my team as there is still a long way to go to Milan."
