Peter Sagan Wins Vuelta a España Stage Three

Tinkoff Saxo's Peter Sagan has won the third stage of the 70th Vuelta a España.

With Marcus Burghardt forced to abandon after the mass crash in stage two and Vincenzo Nibali of Astana sent home for holdng onto his team car, stage three was from Mijas to Malaga.

This 154.5km stage saw Natnael Berhane (MTN-Qhubeka), Slyvain Chavanel (IAM), Omar Fraile (Caja Rural), Walter Pedraza Morales (Colombia), Martin Velits (Etixx-QuickStep), Alexid Gougeard (Ag2r), Ilia Koshevoy (Lampre-Merida), and Maarten Tjallingii (LottoNL-Jumbo) get into an early break and they were three minutes clear of the peloton which included race leader Esteban Chaves of Orica GreenEdge.

Over the Alto de Migas climb, led by Omar Fraile and the lead went out to 3.08 before Paolo Tiralongo who was also involved in the stage two crash abandoned.

On a sunny day, Omar Fraile led over the summit of the Puerto del León to take over the KOM jersey.

The front group split and Fraile, Chavanel, Tjallingi, and Gougeard.were left to battle on with a lead of 1.45 and sixty kilometres left to race.

The two dropped riders came back to re-form the six riders up front with 48kms left.

Nacer Bouhani of Cofidus crashed whilst up the road, Chavanel took the first sprint and the second at Torre del Mar.

With 14.2kms to go, everyone was back together and Movistar and Team Sky were on the front heading into the city of Malaga.

Past Malaga's football ground with 3.4kms left and heading down towards the old town through the tunnels and onto the finisihing straight.

John Degenkolb, Sagan and Bouhani went for it and it was Peter Sagan of Tinkoff Saxo who won in 4.06.47 ahead of Bouhanni, Degenkolb, Drucker and Richeze, followed by Sbaragli, Docke,  Stuyven, Reynes and Asbroeck.

Esteban Chaves continues to lead the race with a five second lead of Tom Dumoulin, followed by Nicholas Roche and Dan Martin.
