André Greipel has been forced to pull out of the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic on Sunday, 2 August, due to a knee injury sustained on stage 14 of the Tour de France.

The Lotto Soudal sprinter won four stages of the 2015 Tour, including the final stage on the Champs-Élysées last Sunday, and was due to go head-to-head with Mark Cavendish for victory on The Mall in the Classic this weekend.

But the German star injured his knee in a crash on the 14th stage and almost abandoned the Tour in the Alps before recovering to win the prestigious climax in Paris.

“It’s a great shame that André has had to pull out but we fully understand that he needs to give his knee time to heal and  recover properly,” said Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic Race Director Mick Bennett.

“André is one of the world’s great sprinters and has been in top form recently. Yet even without him, the Classic will still be one of the best one-day races ever seen in the UK with world-class cyclists such as Mark Cavendish, Sir Bradley Wiggins and Philippe Gilbert in the line-up, not to mention last year’s champion Adam Blythe and the man he beat to the line, Ben Swift.”
