Vincenzo Nibali won the Tirreno Adriactico on a day when Tony Martin won the final time trial

The final stage of the race between the two seas was a 9.2km time trial starting and finishing in San Benedetto del Tronto.

Another fifty two riders withdrew from the race prior to the start in the pouring rain.

Radio Shack's Fabian Cancellera was one of the main riders out early to tackle the course which included the sea front and try and better Jens Mouris' time of 10.52.

Hayden Roulston set a new time of 10.45 but Cancellera smashed the time of his team mate by coming home in a time of 10.37.

It was a lead that last for just over ten minutes as Lampre's Adriano Malori finished in a time of 10.31.

British Time Trial Champion Alex Dowsett of the Movistar team could not get anywhere near that time, finishing fourteen seconds down on Malori's time.

World Time Trial Champion Tony Martin was down on Malori at the checkpoint but kept going to finish in a time on 10.25.

Just before 4pm local time, race leader Vincenzo Nibali went down the ramp and started on the road which Chris Froome was already on.

Froome finished in a time of 10.40 which was enough for fifth place on the day. Nibali came in eleven down on Froome's time but it was enough to give him his second Tirreno-Adriatico in two years.
