Navarro Wins Vuelta a España Stage 13

Cofidis' Danny Navarro has won stage thirteen of the 69th Vuelta a España.

A 188.7 kilometres stage from Belorado to Obregón. Parque de Cabárceno for the 190 riders left in the race, started with fourteen riders in a break after seven kilometres but was soon down to a break featuring  Alexey Lutsenko (Astana), Jay Thomson (MTN-Qhubeka), Peter Sagan (Cannondale), Paolo Longo Borghini (Cannondale), Jasper Stuyven (Trek Factory Racing), Damiano Cunego (Lampre-Merida), Stef Clement (Belkin), Luis Leon Sanchez (Caja Rural), Danilo Wyss (BMC), Damien Gaudin (Ag2r-La Mondiale) and Vegard Breen (Lotto-Belisol).

After forty kilometres of racing, they had a lead of 3.17 and went over to cover 49.6kms in the first hour,

Murilo Fischer (FDJ.fr) abandoned before the escaping group started on the Alto Estacas de Truebo climb and as they started to near the summit, Jurgen Van Den Broeck (Lotto-Belisol also withdrew from the race.

By the time Luis Leon Snachez had been first over the top, Brett Lancaster (Orica-GreenEdge) had become the third rider to abandon today.

Onto the Alto del Caracol with 48kms left and Stef Clement was leading the way.

The climb saw the lead group fracture and Wyss, Luis Leon Sanchez, Cunego, Lutsenko and Gaudin, out on their own with a lead of 1.40 with 21.2kms to go.

Six kilometres later and Alexey Lutsenko jumped and got clear. Team Sky chased him and he was caught with 7.8kms to go.

With two kilometres left, Navarro got past Gianluca Brambilla (Omega Pharma QuickStep) on an uncategorised climb and then Dan Martin and Chris Froome went on the chase.

Under the flam rouge and Danny Navarro of Cofidis was on his way and he won in 4.21.04 ahead of Moreno and Kelderman, Valverde, Bouhani, Caruso, Contador and Dan Martin. Chris Froome finished 13th.

Alberto Contador leads Valverde by twenty seconds going into stage fourteen.
