Moorcroft's 3000m Record Goes After 34 Years

Coventry kid Dave Moorcroft's long-standing British men’s 3,000m record was finally broken after 34 years by Mo Farah at Birmingham Diamond League meeting this afternoon, writes Ziad Chaudry. 

Double Olympic champion Farah shredded the former Coventry Godiva Harriers best by 0.17th of a second on his way to completing his 3,000m victory in seven minutes 32.62 seconds. 

And five years ago in Monaco Farah also took away Moorcroft’s British 5,000m record of 13:00.41 by just over seven seconds. 

The remaining individual British record held by a Coventry Godiva athlete is Marlon Devonish who holds the rarely run men’s 150m straight with a time of 14.87seconds which was achieved at Great North City Games in Gateshead nearly five years ago. 

Coventry Godiva Harriers youngsters were involved in four club:connect relays at Alexander Stadium prior to the main Birmingham Diamond League event where their best result came in under 15’s 4 by 100m mixed relays, coming second in 48.75secs behind home club Birchfield Harriers (48.11)
