Modolo Wins Giro Stage Seventeen

Sacha Modolo of Lampre-Merida has taken the victory on stage seventeen of the 98th Giro D'Italia.

A short 134km stage from Tirano to Lugano came after an epic stage sixteen which had seen Alberto Contador of Tinkoff Saxo cement his place in the lead of this race, a second victory of Astana's Mikel Landa and sixteen riders fined various amounts of Swiss Francs for holding on to their team cars.

Marco Bandiera (Androni), Iljo Keisse (Etixx Quick Step) and Giacomo Berlato (Nippo Vini Fantini) went away after two kilometres and were 2.03 ahead when they crested the day's only climb at Teglio.

The gap came down as Keisse took the intermediate sprint to 1.36 with points leader Elia Viviani picking up points to extend his lead in the competition.

As the race moved towards Switzerland, the gap was down to a minute with 45.9kms left.

The trio, led by Berlato, rode through the second intermediate sprint with a lead of just twenty seconds and a shake of hands between them indicated that their time on the front was over.

With 27kms left, they were passed by the peloton and Patrick Gretsch and Adam Hansen attacked with the Lotto Soudal rider going clear until the ten kilometres to go mark.

Over the border and into Switzerland, alongside Lake Como on a glorious day and the peloton allowed Tom Jelte Slagter of Cannondale-Garmin to get slightly clear before Luca Paolini took over.

Lampre were among the teams on the front going under the flam rouge and they led and Sacha Modolo was sent on his way to win in 3.07.52 ahead of Nizzolo and Mezgec, followed by Haussler, Appollonio,  Broeckx, Lobato, Porsev, Reza , Van der Lijke and Viviani.

Alberto Contador continues to lead by 4.02 from Mikel Landa.
