Matthews Wins Tour Of Utah Fourth Stage

Orica Green Edge's Michael Matthews won the Larry H Miller Tour Of Utah Fourth Stage.

A five lap stage of 34 miles or 54.8kms around Salt Lake City, started at 5.30pm local time so people could finish work and watch the race.

Jim Stemper wearing the Most Aggressive rider's jersey was the first to attack, quickly followed by Jens Voigt. They were soon dealt with by the peloton who carried on after Stage One winner Greg Van Avermaet had a mechanical.

With the first lap completed in a time of 13.40, Voigt started the second lap back in front. Out into the country side and Nelson Oliveira of Radio Shack and Marsh Cooper (OPM) attacked before being joined by Lawson Craddock (BLS) who shot out of the peloton to bridge the gap.

Six more riders joined the front before Garmin's Ryder Hesjedal led the peloton back to them and was leading as speeds increased to thirty miles per hour.

Francisco Mancebo, Marsh Cooper, Craig Lewis and Jens Voigt broke away again and were joined by Chris Baldwin of Bissell. The five, none of whom were a threat to the race leader Lachlan Morton, had a fifteen second lead as the third lap which featured the only sprint of the stage after twenty miles.

Mancebo took the points as their lead went out to twenty seconds. it was fifteen seconds as Mancebo led the quintet out on the bell lap.

Marsh Cooper swerved off the road and crashed into a young child, leaving four riders in the lead with 9.2kms remaining.

Craig Lewis of Champion System attacked followed by Voigt who was passed by Magno Nazaret. The chasers were caught by the United HealthCare team who had the peloton strung out with 3kms to go.

Lewis was caught and onto State Street, BMC were on the front going under the flam rouge. Van Avermaet attacked, Michael Matthews followed in his wheel and won the sprint ahead of Van Avermaet and Jasper Stuyven.

Lachlan Morton did not give up any time and keep's his leader's jersey.
