Irishman Daniel Martin won the Tre Valli Varesine in Varese in Italy this afternoon but Mark Cavendish in his first race since the Tour De France was down the field.

The Garmin rider, who won a stage of the recent Tour Of Poland, according to our friends at cyclingnews.com, broke clear from the peleton with Domenico Pozzovivo (Colnago-CSF) on the final climb before dropping the Italian a kilometre from the line on the drag up to the finish in Varese.

As this was a race with a number of hills, HTC Colombia rider Mark Cavendish (pictured below) was not expected to challenge for a win but he will be amongst the favourites for the final race in the series on Thursday - the Coppa Bernocchi.
