Blanco's Paul Martens won the opening stage of the Volta ao Algarve which started in Portugal today

The four stage tour kicked off with a 198.8km stage from Faro to Albufeira and was one for the sprinters including Mark Cavendish, fresh from his Tour Of Qatar victory last week.

Vorganov, Paulinho, Txurruka, Corti and Jones were the day's escapers with a lead of three minutes after 90kms of racing.

Fifty kilometres later, that gap was down to 1.50 and with ten to go, it was down to just twenty seconds and a kilometre later, it was all over.

The race came down to a sprint and it was Martens who took the win ahead of Machado, Bos, Nizzolo, Sprengers and Mark Cavendish in sixth.

Sergio Paulinho took the King Of The Mountain classification.
