Britain's Lizzie Armitstead has won the opening stage of the 2015 Aviva Women's Tour.

There were some big names in women's cycling on show for this race which started with a 112km stage from Bury St Edmunds to

and saw the peloton was altogether for the first fifty kilometres with speeds for the first hour producing an average speed of 40.5kmph.

The second hour started with the QOM climb at Hemmingstone, which was won by Melissa Hoskins ahead of Anouska Koster and Malgorzata Jasinska.

Lauren Komanski of Team USA put in an attack but was caught before the race entered Ipswich where there were big crowds as there were for the start.

Marta Tagliaferro and Elinor Barker broke away and took the sprint at Kesgrave after 67.8kms and it was the same duo who took the second Chain Reaction Intermediate sprint at Melton after seventy seven kilometres.

They were part of a four rider break who took the points on the second climb at Snape and then stayed away until into the final kilometre.

However, they could not hold on and just before the finish line in Aldeburgh, they were caught and Lizzie Armistead was able to take the win before being involved in a crash after the finish line. It was unclear as to why it happened but there is speculation that Armitstead either collided with a barrier or swerved to avoid people stood in the road.

Her team had to collect her jersey on the podium which saw Katy Hall in the QOM jersey and Alexis Ryan as the best young rider.
