Lizzie Armitstead is the new British Road Race champion after winning the Elite Womens race in Glasgow this morning.

Eight laps of a 14.2km long but very technical course saw Amanda Jay Burgess with a fifteen second lead after the first lap.

She was caught mid-way through the second by the peloton who had split into three groups by the end of lap three with eighteen riders in the first group.

That group split again and Amy Roberts, Dani King, Laura Trott from Wiggle-Honda, Lizzie Armitstead and Emma Trott from Dolmans took over at the front.

As Katy Colclough crashed and had to abandon, Amy Roberts was shed by the escapers, who were ninety seconds ahead of the peloton and fifty five seconds ahead of Laws, Thomas and Roberts with three laps left.

Emma Trott was dropped on the penultimate lap leaving three riders to go for the victory and only 23 riders able to complete the full race distance.

Lizzie Armitstead attacked and got 25 seconds clear and that was enough for the Boels-Dolman rider to take victory for the second time.

Laura Trott beat her Wiggle-Honda team-mate Dani King to finish second with British Time Trial Champion Joanna Rowsell (Wiggle-Honda) fourth and Emma Trott fifth.
