Lander Wins Tour Of The Basque Country Stage Five

Astana's Mikel Lander has won the fifth stage of the Tour Of The Basque Country.

Stage Five was from Eibar to Aia and this stage over 155.5kms saw Pires, Sorensen, Dennis, Visctoni, Anton, Betancur, Montaguti, Cherel, Darryl Impey, Reichenbach, Van der Lijke, Landa, Agnoli, Taaramae, Tony Gallopin, Vervaeke, Wellens, Tony Martin, De la Cruz, Bono, Conti, Slagter, Danielson, Arredondo, Didier, Fraile, Monlina, Molalrd, Txurruka, Bagot and Hardy form a break.

They were 2.30 ahead after the first third of the race and at the top of the category one climb, they were 3.38 ahead with 75kms to go.

The gap went out to 4.20 as there was another crash involving a Tinkoff Saxo rider in Oliver Zaugg who was lying prone on the ground.

On to the Alkirza , with Fraile having taken the points on the three of the nine climbs, with a lead of 3.29, Gilbert attacked out of the peloton.

Franck Schleck and Bauke Mollema collided and ended up in a barrier whilst up the road, the gap went under two minutes.

Louis Vervaeke took the intermiediate sprint before the riders started on the Aia which had ramps of up to 29%. On it, Rein Taaramae of Astanta attacked and was first over the climb with a lead of eleven seconds.  

Tim Wellens, Tony Gallopin, Tom Danielson and Michael Landa bridged over to Taaramae with 12.8kms as Tony Martin paced world champion Michael Kwaitkowski towards the Arredondo group.

Kwiatkowski's group were 37 seconds ahead of the peloton with seven kilometres to go.

Gallopin dropped out of the front group which was onto the final climb of the Aia.

Jon Izagirre was leading the group containing the race leader but it was Tom Danielson who was on the front going under the flam rouge. Taaramae was dropped.as Danielson led.

Simon Yates got up towards the front group but he could do nothing as  Mikel Lander of Astana went away and won in 4.06.01 ahead of Tim Wellens and Tom Danielson who came in sixteen seconds later, followed by Taaramae, Gallopin, Yates, race leader Sergio Henao, second placed Joaquin Rodriguez and Tom Jelle Slagter.

SergIo Henao continues to lead the race on count back from Joaquin Rodriquez with Simon Yates now only seven seconds behind going into the final time trial.
