Kennaugh Wins Settimana Coppi e Bartali Stage Two

Team Sky's Peter Kennaugh has taken over the lead in the Settimana Coppi e Bartali race in Italy after victory in the second stage.

The Manxman got himself in to a lead group after Frapporti Janse Van Rensburg Waeytens Malaguti Vaccher Kiserlovski and Busato, who had been in the day's break on a 160.2km stage from Sant’Angelo di Gatteo to Sogliano al Rubicone.

Kennaugh and eighteen riders took to the front and after an attack by Taborre had been dealt with, Kennaugh made his move on the final climb of the day.

Bongiorno went with Kennaugh and passed him but the 25 year old holder of an MBE, came back and took a 38 second lead over Firsanov / Valls Ferri, Caruso, Cataldo, Pantano, Rabottini & Mucelli going into the final kilometre.

Kennaugh got past Bongiorno for a final time and rode to take the victory and leaders jersey by two seconds. Third, some 48 seconds down was Rabottini followed by Cataldo, Pantano, Pellizotti and Mucelli.

The victory and time bonuses mean that Kennaugh leads the race from Bongiorno by forty two seconds going into the third out of four stages.
