Kennaugh Gets Silver

British Road Race National champion Peter Kennaugh, who recently won the Tour Of Austria, proved his track credentials with a silver medal in the Commonwealth Games

In the Points race final in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Kennaugh worked hard for his Isle Of Man team, picking up points in the sixteen sprint 160 lap race.

Aaron Gate of New Zealand led the Points competition with one hundred laps to go.

Fifteen laps later, and Kennaugh, who up to fourth in standings was in the lead and lapping most of the field in a move which saw Kennaugh take the lead with 66 points at the half way stage.

Kennaugh was second at the sprint with sixty laps to go but according to the computer timings which were all over the place, he was in the Bronze Medal position behind Thomas Scully and Gate of New Zealand.

With thirty laps to go, Kennaugh was into the silver medal positiion and took two points to eight points behind Scully with twenty laps left.

Kennaugh lost the services of Mark Christensen but took two points in the penultimate sprint to put him nine points behind Scully who had 93 points.

On the final lap, Scully went and won with Gate second and Kennaugh in third.

That finish saw Thomas Scully of New Zealand take the Gold Medal at average speed of 51kmh with a silver for Peter Kennaugh who was not happy with the race commissars and a bronze for Arron Gate.
