Jens Voigt has smashed the Hour Record

The recently retired German started to attempt to break Ondrej Sosenka’s 49,7 kilometre mark in the Vélodrome Suisse in Grenchen to huge cheers from a sell out crowd.

Voigt needed to ride laps of eighteen seconds but rode a 24 second and then a sixteen second lap on the second.

The Trek Factory rider settled into a rythmn and was soon clocking laps around the seventeen second mark consistently and average 50kmh by lap 98.

Voigt, in the last major ride of his career, was still averaging 50kmh going into the final twenty minutes and keeping the same speed ten minutes later.

He dropped into the sixteen second laps as he started to ride at 51kmh which was the speed he wanted and finished with an average speed of  51.115km to set the new world record.
