Inxtausti Wins Giro D'Italia Stage Eight

Benat Intxausti of Movistar has won the eight stage of the Giro D'italia.

A 186km stage from Fiuggi to Campitello Matese saw Gianfranco Zilioli (Androni), Branislau Samoilau (CCC), Roger Kluge (IAM), Louis Vervaeke (Lotto Soudal), Ruben Fernandez (Movistar), Eduard Grosu (Nippo Fantini), Elia Favilli (SouthEast), Thomas Danielsoln (Cannondale Garmin) and Maxim Belkov (Katusha) form the first break of the day.

With the rain coming down and Alberto Contador initiallly struggling to get into the peloton which was four minutes down, Stephen Kruijswijk, Pellizotti, Kristoff Vandewalle and Carlos Betancur got 50 seconds ahead of the chasers as the gap to the peloton started to increase.

The gap went out to over ten minutes before Pelizotti was dropped and the three pushed on before Kruijswijk went off on his own with 11,1kms left.

There was now about fifty left in the peloton including Contador, who were 3.20 down on the LottoNL-Jumbo rider, who was 1.11 ahead of Vandewalle and Betancur and they were being chased by Reichenbach of IAM Cycling and Benat Inxtausti on the final climb of the day.

Onto ramps of 12% with five kilometres left for Krujswijk, down the road and Fabio Aru attacked. Contador and Porte followed before Mikel Landa of the Astana team came out of the Contador/Froome group and upped the pace.

This group were now only a minute down so Intxausti went after the Dutchman out front after passing the other chasers who were also being passed by Landa. 

Krujswijk cracked and Benat Inxatausti was alble to pass in and go under the flam rouge.

Arul led the attacks down the road before Porte took over but it was Intxausti who won in 4.51.32 with Landa second twenty second down. Reichenbach was third.

Alberto Contador has a four second lead over Fabio Aru.
