Chris Froome said that he could not be happier after a superb ride put him into the leaders yellow jersey with a victory on the eighth stage of the 100th Tour De France.

Speaking to ITV's Ned Boutling, Froome said: "I could not be happier. It has been a nervous week building up until now.

"My team has done a fantastic job and we have come through this first week in a really good positiion and being able to do that today for me and being able to repay my team-mates with the stage win and Richie (Porte) coming second, we could not have asked for more.

"To have come out with first and second is a dream come true so far."

Froome then spoke about the work he had to in order to win the stage and said: "We were put under pressure there and this is only the first week, we have two weeks to come and now I have the yellow jersey we are going to have to defend it.

"I am not worried about defending it. Pete Kennaught and Richie Porte did a fantastic job and this is a good way to start the mountains for us."
