Gerrans Wins The GP Cycliste De Montréal

Simon Gerrans of Orica Green Edge has become the first rider to win both the GP Cycliste de Quebec and the GP Cycliste De Montréal with victory of the fifth edition in Montreal.

The second one day race of the weekend in Canada, which was 205kms long, produced an early attack and Ryan Roth (Canada), Arnold Jeannesson (FDJ), Jan Polanc (Lampre) and Louis Vervaeke (Lotto) were able to get clear and take a 5.10 lead after twenty kilometres of a race which will continue for the next five years in Montreal, it was announced before the race started.

The first hour of racing saw 36.8kms clocked up and the four escapers had got 10.40 ahead and were continuing to increase their lead.

With 48 kilometres gone, their lead had gone out to 12.15 as the peloton split into three groups.

But at the end of  lap seven (84kms), the lead of the four escapees over the peloton was down to  9:18.

Antoine Duchesne abandoned as the lead increased to 9.30 after as the eighth lap was completed.

Into lap twelve and the gap was down to 6.40 for Ryan Roth, Arnold Jeannesson, Jan Polanc and Louis Vervaeke and then 6.11 with 61.5kms left.

Fifteen kilometres later and Roth was dropped by the other three as Polanc took the five points on the KOM climb with less than four laps and 42kms to go.

The gap started to drop as Polanc and Vervaeke battled on with a lead 2.46 going into the final thirty kilometres.

Ten kilometres later and only Polanc was left with a lead of 1.30. The Lampre rider took the ten points on the climb with British rider Simon Yates taking four points for third.

Polanc took the bell lap with a lead of less than a minute as Geraint Thomas dropped by the peloton. He waa caught with 10.2kms remaining after a great ride.

World Champion Rui Costa attacked as did Bauke Mollema went as did Simon Spillak before a lead group formed.

Costa launched a new raid with four kilometres to go but was pulled back and the sprint was on.

Orica GreenEdge had three riders to lead out Simon Gerrans and he rode to victory in 5.24.26 to become the first rider to win in both Quebec and Montreal.

Second was Rui Costa of Lampre, followed by Gallopin, Navardauskas, Bardet. Dumoulin, Van Avermaet, Hivert,  Gasparotto and Mollema.

Simon Gerran's said: "It is a fantastic day and a perfect job by my team. I had a lot of team mates around me. "It has been special to win both races and I am confident for the World Championships."
