Team Sky's Chris Froome won the Saitama Criterium race in Japan.

Organised by Tour De France race organisers ASO, the Saitama Criterium attracted a crowd of around 200,000 for this first ever 54km race around a 2.6km course, despite the effects of Typhoon Francisco and an earthquake which measured 7.5 that had shaken the riders in the Rafre Hotel and disturbed their sleep. .

Thirty two riders started and were chasing after Orica Greenedge's Fumiyuki Beppu who has attacked with four laps to go. Alejandro Valverde brought him back but with two laps to go, the 2013 Tour De France winner Chris Froome, Cannondale's Peter Sagan and World Champion Rui Costa went away and that was that.

No-one was able to catch the trio and Froome, in his yellow jersey, did one of his legendary kicks to get away and ensure that he took the win ahead of Sagan and Costa.
