Disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong has claimed that the UCI (cycling governing body) outgoing Honourary President Hein Verbruggen knew about his doping and encouraged him to cover it up.

In an interview for today's Daily Mail, Armstrong claims, according to the paper that 'the then president of the UCI,  Verbruggen, was complicit in the skulduggery that allowed him to continue in the 1999 Tour de France despite a positive drugs test.'

Verbruggen in a letter to a number of national cycling federations denied everything and said to SportsMail: "I have never acted inappropriately and my conscience is absolutely clean,' he said. 'With the benefit of hindsight, however, I admit that I could have done some things differently, but I do not accept that my integrity is in doubt."

Armstrong has been told that his co-operation with the UCI could see his life ban reduced to eight years.
