Dragons Test For Coventry Cycle Speedway

Last updated : 02 April 2015 By Joe McLoughlin

High flying Coventry Cycle Speedway club go to Wednesfield Dragons this Sunday (5th April) in the Midland League full of confidence after a superb start to the new season. Tapes up is 2pm.

The Devlins Newsagents sponsored side have made the best start to a new season since they returned to racing four years ago. They lost out by just two points, after leading for most of the match, at top northern side Bury in their first match of the campaign a month ago.

They then shocked Elite League champions Horspath by winning at the Oxfordshire track three weeks ago, before convincingly winning at East Park Wolves 96-80 in their opening Midland League match a fortnight ago.

Coventry will welcome back Polish superstar Dominik Rycharski for the visit to Wednesfield. The 37 year old, now in his eleventh year at Coventry, dropped just three points in his handful of appearances for the club last year.

The inclusion of the fast starting Rycharski, alongside Australian pin-up boy Bobby McMillan and double British finalist Myke Grimes, will give the Coventry speedsters a potent three-pronged heavyweight attack.

They also include teenage whizz-kids Mason Phillips, Dan Drewett and Jake Slatter, who have improved beyond all recognition this year giving rise to hopes that the Hearsall Common based racers are set for a very successful campaign.

Coventry team manager Lee Marsh said: “We have made a great start to the season but this will count for nothing if we slip-up on Sunday, as Wednesfield Dragons have this week strengthened their team with two new signings”.

Coventry team: 1 Mason Phillips 2 Bobby McMillan 3 Dominik Rycharski 4 To be confirmed 5 Myke Grimes 6 Dan Drewett 7 Jake Slatter 8 Joe Mclaughlin

The match will be supported by a junior challenge match between the teams, immediately following the Midland League Division 1 clash.

Following the highly successful revival of the Coventry League last year, Coventry club officials have announced plans for an extended competition this year which sees teams from Birmingham and Leicester joining the league.

The two new clubs will join famous local Cycle Speedway names from the past, including Brandon Bees, Earlsdon Hammers and Warwick Royals in the six strong league, which aims to give new and extended competition to junior riders. The league will be sponsored for the second successive year by Cycle Coventry.

The 2015 Coventry League will race into action next Sunday (12th April at 2pm) at Hearsall Common, with Warwick, Coventry, Earlsdon doing battle against defending champions Brandon.

Meanwhile, the Coventry club are awaiting final details of the biggest ever Cycle Speedway event in the history of the sport in the city, to be staged at Hearsall Common on Thursday 6th August. Full details are expected to be announced by club officials shortly.
