Team Sky have signed Irishman Phillip Deignan for the 2014 season.

Deignan, from Donegal, first came to prominence in 2009 when he won a stage in the Vuelta a España riding for Cervelo.

After a season out through illness, he moved following the demise of Cervelo to Radio Shack and then in 2012 joined American team UnitedHealthCare.

He finished tenth in the recent US Pro Cycling Challenge and his palmares for this season shows him winning the Tour of the Gila top ten finishes at the Tour of California and Tour of Utah.

Team Sky Director David Brailsford said: “We’re well aware of what he is capable of on a bike. He’s a climber of real quality and he will certainly strengthen our squad even further in stage race competition.

“He brings experience to the team and we believe he belongs at this level. It’s great to finally have an Irish rider on our roster and I’m certain that under our coaches and performance staff there is a lot more to come from Philip.”
