De Marchi Wins Vuelta a España Stage Fourteen

Alessandro De Marchi of BMC Racing Team has won stage fourteen of the 70th Vuelta a Espana.

Stage fourteen was from Vitoria/El Campoo to Fuente del Chivo and 215km long.

It was a stage that started without Geoffrey Soupe (Cofidis) is out of the Vuelta. So too is Samuel Sanchez (BMC) and Thomas De Gendt (Lotto Soudal) and saw Alessandro de Marchi (BMC), Salvatore Puccio (Team Sky), José Joaquín Rojas (Movistar), Mikael Chérel (Ag2r-La Mondiale) and Carlos Quintero (Team Colombia) break away and get 6.24 ahead with 125km left to race.

With 94kms left, Mikael Chérel led the leaders over the Puerto de Estacas de Trueba as the gap went up to 9.04 and then up to 9.55 before Lluis Mas (Caja Rural) abandoned.

Chérel took the points on the Puerto del Escud as the gap went back up to ten minutes.

The next points to be awarded were for the intermediate sprint with 24kms to go, which was won by Carlos Quintero of the Colombia team and with a lead of 9.43, it was looking likely that the stage winner would come from the five man break who were on the final El Campoo climb.

Chérel attacked with just under five kilometres to go but two kilometres later, Puccio was initially shed but after a super effort came back in to join the leaders once more.

Under the flam rouge and Allesandro Del Marchi attacked and it proved successful as away he went to win in 5.43.12 with Salvatore Puccio second 21 seconds back, Rojas thirtd 32 seconds back, Mickaël Chérel fourth thirty eight seconds back and Carlos Quintero a minute down.

The peloton with race leader Fabio Aru making an number of attacks, were led home by Nairo Quintana of Movistar who finished 3.32 down, followed by Joaquin Rodriguez, Esteban Chaves, Fabio Aru and Rafal Majka of Tinkoff Saxo.

"With a bit of luck, in the right moment, I had the energy to do a fast attack," De Marchi said to the BMC press office. "I was lucky because I do not think I was the strongest."
