Coventry born Cal Crutchlow lasted only 21 laps of the Le Mans Moto GP.
The Honda rider had qualified fourth but was forced out of the race won by Jorge Lorenzo after twenty one laps.
Crutchlow, who is now sixth in the World Championship standings tweeted: "Tough race today for a lot of us. Sorry to my team and try again in 2 weeks."
