Contador Takes La Vuelta

Alberto Contador won the Vuelta A Espana this afternoon.

The Spaniard came in 54th on the final stage of this year's Grand Tour which finished with a 115km stage from Cercedilla to Madrid.

The usual procession ended when Sergey Lagutin (Vacansoleil-DCM), Kevin Seeldrayers (Astana), Sergio Carrasco (Andalucia), Javier Chacon (Andalucia), Mikel Astarloza (Euskaltel-Euskadi) and Francisco Aramendia (Caja Rural) attacked but they were unable to get any more than twenty seconds clear and the race ended in a bunch sprint. 

John Degenklob took the win in a time of 2.44.57 ahead of Viviani and Bennatti to take his fifth victory of the tour which was won to huge cheers from the Spanish crowd when Contador came in.

Chris Froome finished fourth overall, Nicholas Roche finished 12th, Ian Stannard was 111th, Ben Swift 121st, Steve Cummings was 156th,
