Chris Froome Wins Tour Of Oman

Team Sky's Chris Froome won his first race of the 2014 season when he finished safely to win the Tour Of Oman.

Froome had taken the lead oof the race with victory in the fifth stage and needed to finish the 146.5km stage from Al Jisah to Matrah Corniche.

One hundred and forty one riders took to the road for the sixth and final stage and it was not until the seventeenth kilometre that Nicholas Roche of Tinkoff Saxo got into an attack with Gavazzi of Astana, Greg Van Avermaet of BMC, Nicky Terpstra of Omega Pharma Quick Step and Per Ligthart of Lotto.

By the time, Ligthart has taken the Al Jissah climb after twenty nine kilometres, they were 1.35 clear.

Omega Pharma Quick Step decided to chase them down and their lead was down to thirty seconds when Terpstra on his own. took the bonus sprint.

Terpstra was caught and a new break which included Agnoli (AST), Burghardt (BMC), Dockx (LTB), Minard (ALM), Van Emden (Bel), Boaro (TCS). Albasini, Hepburn (OGE) and Bazzana (UHC).

They lasted out front until just after the Bousher Alamrat climb and Juul Jensen (TCS), Michael Hepburn of Orica Green Edge and Bazzana started on the front running duties.

The average speed for the first two hours was now 42.2km/h as the trio extended their lead to 1.13 before going into the final twenty five kilometres with a 48 second gap as they started on a circuit around Muscat for a second and final time.

Bazzan won the second sprint of the day but the peloton were catching them and inside the final kilometre, they were caught and a bunch sprint ensued with Lotto's Andre Greipel taking the stage win in a time of 3.25.41 ahead of Nacer Bouhani.

 

Chris Froome, who has been marshalled by his Team Sky team mates all day finished into the peloton and came home to take the overall victory by twenty six seconds from Tejay Van Garderen of BMC and Rigoberto Uran.
