Esteban Chaves took the win on the sixth stage of the 70th Vuelta a España and took back the leader's red jersey.

With Giant Alpecin's Tom Dumoulin in the race lead by a second after Caleb Ewen became the youngest winner of a Grand Tour stage since 1982 on stage five, stage six was 200.3kms long and from Córdoba to Sierra de Cazorla with another uphill finish.

There was no break after fifty eight kilometres, although an eleven man group which included points leader Peter Sagan did try and get clear but were quickly brought back before Matej Mohoric abandoned.

Steve Cummings of MTN Qhubeka, Durasek, Gautier, Rubiano, Terpstra and Pieter Velits did get into a break and they were 4.04 ahead with 74kms to go.

Over the The Alto de Baeza and the gap started to fall to 1.30 with twenty kilometres to go and in temperatures of 39C on the road, Rubiano attacked followed by Cummings who took over the lead.

The man from the Wirral, pushed on with a thirty seconds lead but with less than two kilometres to go on the final climb, Esteban Chaves of Orica GreenEdge got past Cummings and rode away to win in a time of 4.46.18 with Dan Martin second and Tom Dumoulin third. Chris Froome was seventh with Nicholas Roche tenth.

Chaves leads the race by ten seconds from Dumoulin with Dan Martin third and Nicholas Roche in fourth place.

"It was a good effort," said Cummings. "I knew with Movistar there was not much chance but I had to try. I will try again in a few days."

Chaves said: "If you have good legs you try and today I had really good legs. The team stayed with me all day and this team is like a family with Caleb winning yesterday. "I was in a good position for the climb and i tried and then looked behind me after I had come across the finish line."

Sagan said: "It was really hard for me. "For me it was too hard. The heat is impossible. You take water from the car and then you want tea."
