Cavendish Wins Giro D'Italia Stage 13

Mark Cavendish collected his third stage win when he won the Giro D'Italia Stage 13 today.

A a 121km stage from Savona to Cervere saw  Martijn Keizer (Vacansoleil-DCM) and Francesco Failli (Farnese Vini) go away early.

They were three minute and thirty seconds ahead of the peloton containing race leader Joaquim Rodriguez and red points jersey wearer Mark Cavendish. front of

The World Champion's Team Sky team mate in Jeremy Hunt was at the front of the peloton leading the way before there was a crash with 94.1kms to go which saw Reto Hollenstein hitting the deck pretty hard. The Austrian was placed on a stretcher with what looked like a broken collar bone.

The only climb of the day was at Montezemolo and Francesco Failli took the three points from this category four climb with a 5;06 advantage.

The duo stayed away but thanks to the work of Hunt and co, their lead dropped to fifty seconds with 37kms to go.

Cavendish added three more points to his points tally when he led home the peloton after Keizer and Failli had taken the main points at the intermediate sprint.

With 21kms to go, the duo's day at the front was over and the race was heading for a bunch sprint.

With 9.1kms to go, Rollin and Benedetti crashed as GreenEdge took control at the front.

The finish line approached with Peter Kennaugh and Geraint Thomas making sure that Mark Cavendish was in a goo position.

Robbie Hunter and Matt Goss went through but Cavendish got through to win in a time of 3:02:07 ahead of Kristoff and Renshaw.

Joaquin Rodriquez still leads by seventeen seconds.
