Omega Pharma Quick Step's Mark Cavendish is the 2013 British Road Race champion and will wear the white jersey with its red and blue bands in all roads races for the next twelve months.

In Glasgow today, Ian Stannard, the defending British champion and Andy Fenn opened up a lead on the first of thirteen 14.2km laps around Glasgow Green.

On a circuit which offered climbs, cobbles, twists and tight turns, Mark Cavendish was amongst the chasers along with Garmin Sharp's David Millar and Team Sky's Peter Kennaugh and Ben Swift.

By lap three, Stannard and Fenn were 27 seconds clear of the Cavendish group and 1.18 ahead of a second chasing group which featured the likes of Ian Bibby, Kristian House and Russell Downing.

With six laps to go, Cavendish's group caught Stannard and Fenn and took control of the race.

Fenn and Swift were dropped leaving four riders out in front with four laps remaining.

Fenn decided enough was enough and called it a day and the race organisers pulled those who were behind  Greenwood, Handley, Doull, Moses, R Downing, McLay, Williams, Stewart Hampton, Barker, Bibby, Lowsley Williams, McNally, Partridge and Bowater who were 11.49 down were pulled with three laps to go.

That left twenty four riders, who were cheered on by crowds of around 30,000 according to Glasgow Police, still in this race which was being fought out at the front by Mark Cavendish and his good friend David Millar working against Team Sky's Ian Stannard and Peter Kennaugh, whilst Luke Rowe tried to bridge the gap to join them.

With a lap to go, Ian Stannard punctured leaving just three riders in front. However, the champion put his foot to the pedal and was soon back with Cavendish, Millar and Kennaugh.

Onto Montrose Street for the final time and Mark Cavendish attacked. He was pulled back by David Milar who took over and got 25 metres clear.

Into Glasgow Green and Millar was three seconds clear but  Cavendish, Stannard and Kennaugh caught him up and so it came to a sprint and Mark Cavendish won ahead of Stannard and Millar.
