Mark Cavendish finished eighth in opening prologue of the Three Days of West Flanders in Belgium.

This annual event started with a 7km individual time trial in Middelkerke and saw Omega Pharma Quick Step's Dries Devenyns, the first rider down the ramp.

He set a time of 8.28 which lasted until Bob Jungels beat it by a second and then Frantise Krabon knocked three more seconds off Jungel's time.

Riders were starting to finish quicker. Firstly, Gert Steegmans came home with a time of 8.18 before Belgian Kristof Vandewalle of Omega Pharma-Quick Step smashed that with a time of 8.09.

Vandewalle kept the lead as the likes of Mark Cavendish who rode superbly well to finish in a time of 8.28 and last year's winner Julian Vermote who was last down the ramp, finished twenty seconds back, Vandewalle was the winner beating Radio Shack's Portugese rider Tiago Machado by seven seconds.

The win was not the only good news for the Sky Blues of Omega Pharma Quick Step as including Mark Cavendish who was placed eighth, they had the winner and three other riders in the top ten.
