Cavendish Crashes In Tirreno Adriatico

The chances of the world's greatest cycling sprinter Mark Cavendish winning the final stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico ended when he crashed with six kilometres of the seventh and final stage to go.

The HTC Colombia rider, who had been struggling with dental problems which have affected the start of his season, was handily placed but the forks in his front wheel gave out and Cavendish was sent crashing to the ground.

He recovered and started on a new bike but could not get back to the leaders. Fiirst In the sprint for the line at the end of the 164.km stage tour was Team Sky's Edward Boassson Hagen in a time of 3 hrs, 52 mins, 56 seconds.

Garzelli won the general classification on count backs recording the same time as Scarponi.

Cavendish will ride in Milan-San Remo classic on Saturday. You can see the race on Eurosport.
