Mark Cavendish rode the fifth stage of the Tour Of Switzerland but had to settle for a day in the peleton.

Despite suffering from severe road rash, the HTC Colombia rider was passed fit to continue and apologised to those brought down in the crash yesterday which happened as the Manx man sped for the line.

On the fifth stage which was 172.5km long and made its way from Wettingen to Frutigen, on what was a very wet day, Marcus Burghardt, Maaskant and Oss broke away.

There were two crashes with the second some 33 km from the finish seeing a Lotto rider hitting some spectators. The peleton looked nervous and with the front three not affecting the general classification, they were allowed to go all the way to the finish line.

It was BMC's Marcus Burghardt who made the break and finished two seconds ahead of Masskant with Oss third. Australian Robbie McEwen won the bunch sprint for fourth place.

Tomorrow's stage is 208km long.
