Marco Canola of Bardiani has won stage thirteen of the 97th Giro D'Italia.

Rigoberto Uran of Omega Pharma Quick Step had moved into the maglia rosa after winning the time trial and led the riders out on a 157km Fossano to Rivarolo Canavese.

Five riders in Jackson Rodriguez (Androni), Marco Canola (Bardiani CSF), Jeffry Johan Romero (Colombia), Gert Dockx (Lotto-Belisol), and Angelo Tulik (Europcar) got away and were joined by Maxim Belkov (Katusha) fo form a six man group which had a ninety second lead after thirty kilometres of racing on a sunny day.

As the race went through Cheri with 100kms to go, their lead had gone out to 2.22. Thirty kilometres later and at an average speed of 43km/h, there was little change as the six out front continued to work together.

Vladimir Gusev of Katusha came a cropper when trying to take a rain coat from his car, it became entangled in his back wheel and took him down.

As the hailstones came down, the six up front had a lead of 3.13 with just over forty kilometres to go.

The only climb of day came with 33kms to go and saw Canola take the points ahead of Rodriquez.

Into Busano on the foot of the Alps, there was snow on the side of the road as the six battled on with a lead of 2.41.

The six kept going and made it until the final ten kilometres when with the gap of around a minute, Canola,  Jackson Rodriguez and Angelo Tulik left the other escapers to their own devices as they went for the victory.

The peloton which had been split was still looking at each other as Marco Canola took the win in 3.37,20 beating Rodriquez and Tulik.

A minute later, Nacer Bouhanni led the peloton home, followed by Giacomo Nizzolo, Elia Viviani, Luka Mezgec, British rider Ben Swift, Tyler Farrar and Borut Bozic.

Rigoberto Uran keep the maglia rosa for another day.
