The Leopard-Trek rider won the stage around Lugano ahead of HTC Highroad's Tejay Van Garderen and Liquigas' Peter Sagan.
Britain's Chris Froome finished 11th, 24 seconds back. Ian Stannard was fifty seconds back in 85th with Ben Swift fifty seven seconds back in 112th.
Tomorrow's second stage is from Airolo to Crans-Montana, where Coventry City trained during their Swiss Tour back in 2009.
