This group was reduced to ten riders with 74 miles gone with Cadel Evans leading the group.over the Empire Pass climb.

On the descent down the Big Cottonwood Road, Evans and Euser were joined by Rosskopf and Zoidl.

Evans was the virtual leader on the road but the gap was starting to drop and had fallen to 2.50 with ten kilometres left.

Attacks came from Anaconda from Lampre-Merida and Wilco Kelderman of Belkin but Evans and Rosskopf stuck to their task as the gap to race leader Tom Danielson fell to only 35 seconds.

Evans surged away and took the win in 4.34.31 ahead of Joe Rosskopf of the Hincapie Development Team and Trek Factory Racing's Riccardo Zoidl.
