The British National Road Race Championships get under way today.

Monmouthshire will be the venue for the National Championship and will see the Time Trial comprising of two laps of a 21km (thirteen mile) course for the Elite men's competition which was won by Movistar's Alex Dowsett last year in Glasgow.

Dowsett has admitted that he will have to be on top of his game to beat Team Sky's Sir Bradley Wiggins and Geraint Thomas as well as another Team Sky rider in Luke Rowe and the 2007 champion David Millar of Garmin Sharp.

The Women's Time Trial is only one lap of the thirteen mile course and will see Joanna Rowsell trying to defend her 2013 title.

Lizzie Armistead, Emma Pooley, Dame Sarah Storey and Katie Archibald, all are in with a great chance of taking Rowsell's crown.

In the U23 race, Sam Harrison defends his his tile on the thirteen mile course but will face a stiff challenge from Owain Doull, who comes from nearby Cardiff and knows the roads well as well as Jon Dibben, Scott Davies and Lotto-Belisol’s Dan McLay.
