Britain Gets Cycling Silver

Great Britain got its first medal of the 30th Olympic Games this afternoon when Lizzie Armitstead won silver in the Womens Road Race.

Britain's Emma Pooley had done much to wipe out much of the 66 rider strong peloton and keep the escapers in check as the race took on two large loops of Box Hill.

Nicole Cook, who won the race in 2008 and whose father and Grandfather both come from Coventry, was finally dropped and had to settle back into the peloton.

Both Britain and The Netherlands had rode this race tactically well and after Pooley had punctured, race favourite Marianna Vos of The Netherlands, Lizzie Armitstead and Russian Olga Zabelinskaya headed towards to the finish line which had been hit by a number of showers.

A sprint developed and as expected, Vos was too strong and won gold in a time of 3.35.29 ahead of Armitstead with the Russian two seconds back.

Nicole Cooke was 31st with Emma Pooley 40th.
