Bonifazio Wins GP Lugano

Niccolo Bonifazio of Lampre has won the 2015 SuisseGas Gran Premio Città di Lugano.

Seven riders in Jon Monsalve, Jay McCarthy, Luka Pibernik, Jerome Coppel, Pirmin Lang, Julien Berard, Patrick Gretsch, Nicola Boem, Simone Stortoni, Antonio Nibali, Nick Dougall, Daniel Teklehaimanot,  Daniel  Martinez, Carlos Quintero, Nico Brungger, Yannick Eckmann and  Andrea Vaccher were able to get away and take a lead of 3.15 after seventy kilometres, in this 184.9km race which started and finished in Lugano in Southern Switzerland.

The lead group started to attack each other and with 117kms gone, Brungger and Coppel were thirty seven seconds ahead of Pibernik and  Teklehaimanot and fifty two seconds ahead of the other chasers with the peloton 2.43 behind. 

By the 136km mark, the chasers had formed a thirteen man group and were now only seven seconds behind Brungger and Coppell.

With fifty kilometres left, Teklehaimanot went away taking a lead of a minute but after 156kms, the peloton was back together.

Onto the last lap and a group of nine riders in Berhane, Conti, Favilli, Fumeaux, Gerdemann, Mejias, Montaguti, Sorensen and Zardini had a ten second lead.

That group was caught and Serge Paulinho was in front with eight kilometres left. With that attack dealt with, Belletti, Gavazzi, Colbrelli, Cimolai, Bonifazio launched a new raid going into the final five kilometres.

That raid split but Niccolo Bonifazio of Lampre stayed strong and took the win ahead of Gavazzi, Montaguti, Guldhammer, Gerdemann, Pellizotti, Megias, Boaro, Tanner and Cunego.
