Over a thousand spectators are expected at tonight’s (Thursday 6th August) showpiece Cycle Speedway international Test match between Great Britain and Australia at Hearsall Common (7.15pm start).
It’s the biggest ever match in Cycle Speedway history in Coventry. It will also be a celebration of the booming success of the Coventry club, who were only revived three years ago but are now thriving on every front.
Volunteers club members have spent all week preparing the Hearsall Common circuit for tonight’s crunch showdown – with the three match Cycle Speedway `Ashes` series tied at one match all.
Thanks to support from Coventry City Council, Cycle Coventry and a host of commercial sponsors, the facility will be transformed for the Test match. A grandstand will be in place along the home straight, together with other sporting event infrastructure.
Admission to tonight’s Test match decider is free – but the Coventry club have appealed to all spectators to buy a commemorative match programme (cost £2) to help offset the major cost of staging the event.
The Coventry club, and Coventry City Council, are rolling out the red carpet treatment for the 50 plus strong Australian touring party. The Australians were being entertained to a civic reception with the Lord Mayor, and being hosted to dinner by Frankie and Benny’s (Tile Hill), as part of their stay in the city.
Home supporters will be behind local hero Myke Grimes, from Wyken, as the 30 year old Caludon Castle school IT worker is expected to play a major part in Great Britain’s attempt to win the series.
Spectators are urged to arrive early for the 7.15pm start time. Car parking is available opposite the track, on the `funfair` site.
