Five riders in  Jan Bakelants (Omega Pharma-QuickStep), Gorka Izagirre (Movistar), Brice Feillu (Bretagne-Séché Environnement), Matthew Busche (Trek Factory Racing) and Sylvain Chavanel (IAM Cycling), got away after twenty kilometres and it was Chavanel who took the first climb of the day.

As their lead went out to over two minutes, Chavanel took the second Category 3 climb.

That lead extended to 2.40 before the peloton started to work and after 75km, it was down to 2.05.

Next up was the first sprint of the day which saw Jan Bakelants taking the three points ahead of Izaguirre and Feillu.

Chavanel, added more points to his haul by taking the third sprint and decided to break away after his other partners for the day were caught by the peloton with 21.2kms to go.
