Coventry Bees beat Leicester 49-41 on Friday night to get their Elite League campaign off to a flyer.

A full strength Bees side took on Leicester at Brandon and after a 3-3 in the opening heat which Krzysztof Kasprzak won, Leicester took the second heat 4-2.

Danny King and Chris Harris rode to a 5-1 win in heat three with Leicester taking the next two heats 4-2 to lead by four points.

Heat six saw a win for Danny King in a 4-2 and was followed by Harris and Krzysztof Kasprzak taking a 5-1 victory and a 3-3.

Leicester took heat nine with a 5-1 but a great ride from Harris and King in heat ten had the Bees leading by two points.

After the interval Leicester won heat eleven 4-2 and after a 3-3 which brought a win for James Sarjeant, Krzysztof Kasprzak and Harris took a 5-1.

Danny King rode to victory in heat fourteen and in the final heat, Chris Harris earned a paid maximum when he won to give the Bees a 49-41 victory.

Bees boss Gary Havelock said to the Bees website: “I’m pleased, it’s nice to get points on the board in the first league match, and I said beforehand that Leicester couldn’t be under-estimated because they have a team of trappers.

“Early on before the dirt moved out it was nip-and-tuck, but what really impressed me was the power of our heat-leaders. It’s comforting to go into important races with guys who are more than capable of getting 5-1s.

“I’d say we’re probably running at about 75 per cent now. Hopefully we can build steadily through the season and then hit our 100 per cent in those semis and the Final!”
