Bart De Clerq of Omega Pharma Lotto won the seventh stage of the Giro D'italia this afternoon.

Stage seven was only 110km long from Maddaloni to Montevergine di Mercogliano through the Appenines of the Campania region, but was the first mountain top finish of the race.

Federico Canuti (Colnago), Jerome Pineau (Quickstep) had been involved in an early break and were joined by Giovanni Visconit (Farnese), Lars Bak (HTC Highroad) and Matteo Montaguti (AG2R) before they made it to the Serra della Strada which was the first climb of the day.

With 50kms left, Omega Pharma Lotto's Sebastian Lang, who had got twenty minutes clear on the second stage before being pulled back, tried to bridge the two minute gap along with Eustkatel's Pierre Cazaux. Jonny Hoogerlands did plenty of attacking but the race came down to a sprint which Bart De Clerq won.
