Lance Armstrong has returned his bronze medal from the Sydney 2000 Olympics to the International Olympic Committee.

The IOC had demanded that the medal be returned after Armstrong admitted to doping.

There had been months of delays but the medal, which has not be re-allocated to Spain's Abraham Olano Manzano, was returned to the United States Olympic Committee, who have now sent it to Switzerland where it is in the vaults of the International Olympic Committee.

In a press statement, the IOC's Mark Adams said: "Yes, we have it. "It is in the vaults.

"The return of the medal marks "the end of a sad chapter for the sport."
