Lance Armstrong has been ordered to return his Olympic medal.

The American won a bronze medal in the Sydney 2000 Olympics but has been ordered to return it by the International Olympic Committee, who have taken action after Armstrong failed to appeal against the stripping of his seven Tour De France titles.

An ICO spokesman is quoted as saying: "We have written to Armstrong asking him to return the medal.

"It was a decision taken in principle at the executive board before Christmas. We were waiting for confirmation from the UCI that he hadn't appealed against his disqualification."
