Javier Acevedo won the fourth stage of the US Pro Challenge Fourth Stage on a day when BMC's Tejay Van Garderen took over the yellow jersey.

The riders minus United HealthCare's Kiel Reijnen, Fabio Sabatini (Cannondale), Michael Torckler (Bissell) and Alex Candelario (Optum). set off from Steamboat Springs on a 165.6km stage to Beaver Creek in temperatures the same as in England.

Chris Froome and Andy Schleck were in the first attack of the day but were quickly brought back before Tim Duggan, Mick Rogers, Danny Pate and his Team Sky team mate Siutsou, Tony Gallopin (RadioShack), Warbasse, Davide Villella (Cannondale), Cooke and Tvetcov took over.

With that attack neutralised, Matt Cooke took the first climb of the day before remnants of that break came back to the fore with Kanstantsin Siutsou getting maximum points on the first sprint.

Siutsou, Tony Gallopin, BMC's Lawrence Warbasse, Davide Villella of Cannondale and Michael Rogers of Saxo Tinkoff, had a 4.40 lead at the feed zone which dropped to 2.40 with 25.4kms left.

The five men in the break started on the Bachelor Gulch climb with a lead of 2.20 over race leader Lachlan Morton, points leader Peter Sagan et al.

Michael Rogers, followed by Gallopin, went off the front as Siutsou dropped off the lead group as the road took a right hand turn up onto the more steeper part of Bachelor Gulch which attracted a good number of fans to the roadside.

Tom Danielson of Garmin Sharp, BMC's Tejay Van Garderen, Mathias Frank, and Javier Acevedo hunted down Rogers and caught him, meaning that Van Garderen was the virtual leader on the road as Morton was now some five minutes behind.

In the rain, Tom Danielson was first over the summit, followed by van Garderen and Acevedo, who went away on the descent before Van Garderen got on his wheel.

Beaver Creek provided an uphill finish and there were plenty of people on hand to see Colombian Javier Acevedo go with 400ms to go and win in a mutually beneficial finish ahead of Van Garderen who took control of the leaders yellow jersey in 4.09.08. Mathias Frank was third 13 seconds down, followed by Danielson and Gregory Brenes at 1.07.

Brit Josh Edmondson finished in seventh place just ahead of Lachlan Morton with the pair coming home 1.28 down.
