On the stage from Pontarlier to Verbier, which passed through Martigny where Coventry City played FC Brasov a year ago, Alberto Contador took the stage with an excellent climb which not only won him the stage but put him in the yellow jersey.

Second was Saxo Bank's Andy Schleck with his brother Frank in fourth.

Wiggins came in fifth some 1 minute 6 seconds behind with Lance Armstrong, who is second in the General Classification in ninth.

Contador is now 1.37 ahead of second place Lance Armstrong and 1.46 ahead of Wiggins.

Tomorrow is a rest day with Tuesday's stage being a 159km race from Martigny to Bourg St Maurice.
