Coventry oldest commercial radio station is coming to an end.

It was announced on Monday, that Mercia which was moved to Birmingham last year, will lose its identity completely and be rebranded with other radio stations like BRMB, Beacon and Wyvern by owners Orion to form a new station called Free Radio from April 2012.

Mercia Sound, which first took to the airwaves in 1980, was the first radio station to provide live match commentary on Coventry City matches and helped the careers of Stuart Linnell, Rob Gurney and current City match announcer John Dalziel.
